According to Statistics Canada, the 75-plus and 85-plus age categories in Canada are anticipated to be among the fastest growing over the next 20 years, with the 85-plus expected to increase approximately 23%. They are also expected to more than double in population by 2031, creating a large demand for housing to meet their requirements and needs.
With the rapid expansion of the seniors sector in Canada in the past decade, new developments have increasingly brought improvements to buildings, programs, and amenities at seniors housing facilities. Seniors (and their families) are well informed about the needs of the aging, the increasing number of choices available, and their freedom to select the lifestyle they want or need. Increasingly, seniors and families are requesting more services to enable residents to “age in place” and delay or avoid a transfer to another setting.
INCREASING LIFE EXPECTANCIES
Primarily as a result of advances in healthcare, Canada’s population is aging. The average life expectancy for Canadians increased to 80.4 years in 2005 from 77.8 years in 1991 according to Statistics Canada. The segment of the population age 65 years and older is expected to more than double in size by 2031 further exacerbating problems with respect to the availability of seniors congregate living and associated supportive living.
